”Running the project in was a fantastic experience! I think that the strength of the project lies in its ability to capture the imagination of the local community, and provide a unique and candid way to understand other cultures.“

— David Fleck, Glasgow School of Art, 2013

This Trust was borne from a passion for travel and how it can transform how we see our place in the world. It offers moments of profound connection - to another culture, environment and people as well as to ourselves.

We fund focused travel opportunities, through our selected partner institutions. These experiences are often for six months or more and involve a specific activity - be it supporting an international development programme, investigating an indigenous architecture or participating in a conservation initiative.
Originally, the awards were centred around Gap Year projects, challenging young school leavers to embark on an experience that would broaden their horizons before they took up their place at university. However, over time we've found fewer students wish to take this year out. Our travel awards have evolved to support post graduate travel opportunities, either focused on research connected with an area of recent study or a chance to delve into a new field of interest.

The travel awards have been running for over 40 years and the intrepid award winners have travelled the length and breadth of our globe - teaching, building, studying, providing medical aid and fostering new connections around the world. When our diverse community of past winners comes together at our bi-annual gatherings, it is a delight to be transported to another place as they share their rich experiences.
